Tips For Bass Fishing Irvine Lake in Southern California

Irvine Lake in Southern California is a popular private owned lake which means no fishing license is required. Irvine Lake has over 750 acres of fishing and camping area and has plenty of weedy areas and grassy fishing holes. This is an excellent large lake for bass fishing but bass are catch and release only at this lake. Below are a few tips for successful fishing in the grassy and weedy waters of Irvine Lake.

One of the more enjoyable aspects of fishing is the social friendliness it brings, and this is especially true of bass fishing. Around Irvine Lake in Southern California, anglers get together on an annual basis to fish for bass, concentrating on weedier areas and grass flats. The reason that bass fishing in weedy waters is so popular is that the weeds are a good supply of oxygen, and this an excellent breeding ground.

Should you be fishing in for bass in more weedy and shallower waters, you will find that there are more productive areas than others. This is because bass like to hide their food, or prepare to hunt. Another reason is that bass are not keen on direct sunlight, so the weeds tend to shade them more from the heat of the sun. Therefore, fishing for bass in grassy areas will usually produce more productive and successful catches.

Yet it's not just surface weeds that you should be looking for when bass fishing. If you find an area that has lilies floating on the water, this is usually a good sign that there are underwater weeds too. The advantage offered for catches here cannot be underestimated - with bass disliking sunlight so much, they will tend to gather around any areas that offer shade and protection, and this is where the sprouts that underwater weeds offer become so attractive to bass. Try dropping a line in an area near lilies to see the results for yourself.

To help you maximize your catch possibilities, there are a variety of different baits available, and all offer an advantage over the others, depending on the type of bass you are fishing for. Using lures such as crankbait, jig and spinnerbait amongst others is a good starting point. Other variations, again depending on the bass you're fishing for, can also include Carolina Rig, brush guard jigs, worm sinker jigs and Texas Rig. If you need to use live bait, it's recommended to use lure such as grasshoppers, crickets, traditional worms and minnows. However, professional anglers are also known to use artificial bait, so you may wish to check this option out before you set off on your bass fishing trip.

Irvine Lake is a short drive from the hustle and bustle of Orange County. It attracts fishermen from all over Southern California. In addition to fishing, Irvine Lake provides a host of other water activities so it is an ideal location to take a fishing vacation.

A 17-pound, 10-ounce largemouth bass was landed at
Corona Lake by Randy Muirhead of Glen Ivy last week setting
a new lake record. It is also one of the best bass landed
in Southern California this year. Muirhead said the 17-10,
caught on a plastic worm, was the smallest he hooked that eve.

He said the bass bite has been very good over the past week,
and he also landed bass at 12 1/2 and 12 3/4 pounds in recent days.
All of the bass have been released back into the lake.

"I don't know what was going on that night, but there were a
bunch of big fish and they were all hitting. I had one fish
rip the hook right off my lure, a jointed crank plug," said
Muirhead, who fessed up to catching and releasing a lot of
bass over the past month and wasn't all that thrilled telling.

"Oh man, I don't want to tell about that lake. Everyone will
be out there now. Next time I'll keep my mouth shut,"
laughed Muirhead. Corona Lake - 951-277-4489

NOW HERE'S THE BIG NEWS

The summer season is winding down but we will be
stocking catfish every Tuesday during the day,
in full view of all the fishermen. We are in the process of cleaning Santa Ana
River Lake and the Water District will be taking
the water down to clean the sides of the Lake.

We will remain open and fishing will be allowed.
Remember the water will be low requiring you to
walk down to the water level. This condition should
be in effect for about 30 days. The good news is the
fish will be concentrated and should make for excellent fishing.

Huckleberry Kids Fish Pond will be open during the cleaning process.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no 24 hour fishing during the cleaning of
Santa Ana River Lakes. No private boats will be allowed due to low
water conditions and no launch ramp available.

CORONA LAKE IS OPEN---
and regular fishing and full water conditions remain.
Stocking of catfish will occur every Tuesday during the day.
24 hour fishing will be available on Friday and Saturday
nights at Corona Lake.

We are watching water temperatures and as soon as the
conditions are OK, we will open for our annual Trout Season.
Stay tuned for our official Trout Grand Opening.
As it looks right now we are a couple weeks away,
probably some time near October 16th to October 30th.
