Weather Conditions and Fishing in Southern California

With the surge in popularity in fishing in Southern California, especially amongst newer anglers, it's a good idea to be aware of the optimal times and seasons for the different breeds. Not only will this help you to land a bigger catch, but it will also help you determine which months you should be fishing in, depending on your taste. Weather conditions play a big part in how successful you are, so it's a good idea to brush up on how to predict how a day is going to pan out.

Since some types of fish that are happy to swim in a variety of weather conditions, predicting the weather becomes even more important. If you want to fish during the times when fish feed and rest, then you will want a calm and stable water surface. Obviously, weather conditions in Southern California need to be clear and free from any kind of turbulent atmosphere. Since fish tend to feed in the afternoon, and then swim to the deeper areas to rest, a clear, mid-afternoon day is ideal for fishing in Southern California.

If the weather conditions are cold, then fish will tend to eat a larger amount for longer, since the sun is attracted to the colder water, heating it. This, in turn, brings the fish to the surface more, or along the banks of a river, making a good catch easier. This is in stark contrast to warmer days, especially in shallower waters, where the fish will rest more frequently, and make them harder to catch.

However, as mentioned, some fish can swim in all weather conditions, so even if there is a prevailing wind, there is still good opportunities for fishing. If the wind is one-directional, you may wish to look towards areas where there are reeds and bushy areas, or even floating timber. However, if the wind is gusty and multi directional, then fish will ten to gravitate toward muddier areas. Be aware, though, that even the sturdiest of fish will probably not swim at all if the wind is particularly strong, and they will rest up at the bottom of the waterbeds.

If rain is the prevailing weather condition, then this can actually be the best time for fishing. Fish will be attracted to the vibrations on the surface, and swim upwards to feast, making this an especially enjoyable and productive time for fishing. Make sure the weather conditions aren't too wet, though - heavy rain will usually stop the fish from surfacing at all.

The best ways to try and predict weather conditions can range. Seasoned anglers will use methods such as cloud types, how the waves are moving, whether thunderheads are visible, and other formulas. However, if you're at all in doubt, simply check the local meteorological conditions online for Southern California to help prepare yourself for an enjoyable day's fishing!

Yes...You Can Catch The Elusive Steelhead

Fishing in Socal Recommended Hot Spots

A 17-pound, 10-ounce largemouth bass was landed at
Corona Lake by Randy Muirhead of Glen Ivy last week setting
a new lake record. It is also one of the best bass landed
in Southern California this year. Muirhead said the 17-10,
caught on a plastic worm, was the smallest he hooked that eve.

He said the bass bite has been very good over the past week,
and he also landed bass at 12 1/2 and 12 3/4 pounds in recent days.
All of the bass have been released back into the lake.

"I don't know what was going on that night, but there were a
bunch of big fish and they were all hitting. I had one fish
rip the hook right off my lure, a jointed crank plug," said
Muirhead, who fessed up to catching and releasing a lot of
bass over the past month and wasn't all that thrilled telling.

"Oh man, I don't want to tell about that lake. Everyone will
be out there now. Next time I'll keep my mouth shut,"
laughed Muirhead. Corona Lake - 951-277-4489

NOW HERE'S THE BIG NEWS

The summer season is winding down but we will be
stocking catfish every Tuesday during the day,
in full view of all the fishermen. We are in the process of cleaning Santa Ana
River Lake and the Water District will be taking
the water down to clean the sides of the Lake.

We will remain open and fishing will be allowed.
Remember the water will be low requiring you to
walk down to the water level. This condition should
be in effect for about 30 days. The good news is the
fish will be concentrated and should make for excellent fishing.

Huckleberry Kids Fish Pond will be open during the cleaning process.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be no 24 hour fishing during the cleaning of
Santa Ana River Lakes. No private boats will be allowed due to low
water conditions and no launch ramp available.

CORONA LAKE IS OPEN---
and regular fishing and full water conditions remain.
Stocking of catfish will occur every Tuesday during the day.
24 hour fishing will be available on Friday and Saturday
nights at Corona Lake.

We are watching water temperatures and as soon as the
conditions are OK, we will open for our annual Trout Season.
Stay tuned for our official Trout Grand Opening.
As it looks right now we are a couple weeks away,
probably some time near October 16th to October 30th.
